Four popular mobile applications offering dating and meetup services have security flaws which allow for the precise tracking of users, researchers claim. This week, Pen Test Partners said that Grindr, Romeo, and Recon have all been leaking the precise location of users and it has been possible to develop a tool able to collate the exposed GPS coordinates.
The research builds upon a report released last week by Pen Test Partners that related to the safety of relationship application 3Fun. It was found that 3Fun was not only leaking the locations of users but also information including their dates of birth, sexual preferences, pictures, and chat data. Bringing together 3Fun, Grindr, Romeo, and Recon, the team were able to create maps of user locations across the world by using GPS spoofing and trilateration — the use of algorithms based on longitude, latitude, and altitude to create a three-point map of a user’s location.
Together, the security issues may impact up to 10 million users globally. The image below shows London users of the applications as an example:.

In this article we engage with methodological challenges that apps pose for empirical analysis and develop an approach to study how apps operate and exchange data between platforms and networks. Complementing previous research on dating apps, our approach involves close attention to the intimacy of app data informed by a relational understanding of infrastructure. We experiment with the research persona as a methodological perspective to collect data at the intersection of five app-infrastructure relations — between app-user, app-device, app-social media, app-network and app-developer —, and initiate or advance an empirical inquiry into the specific materialisations of the data relationships.
The final part of the article reflects on the conceptual and methodological implications of this approach beyond the study of dating apps. In early , as a result of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook limited the types of data that third-party apps could access through its application programming interfaces APIs. The effects of these changes became visible through the temporary breakdown of apps that use the Facebook SSO as an inherent and integral part of their functioning, such as the dating app Tinder.

Brittany Barreto founded the first nationwide DNA-based dating app, and she shares her story of its unexpected, and unavoidable, downfall.
When Brittany Baretto was 18 years old and sitting in an undergraduate genetics seminar, she raised her hand. She asked, to her professor’s point, if particular DNA trait differences between two people can result in attraction, could she, based on that logic, make a DNA-based dating tool. With that question, she set in motion a series of events. These events included teaming up with Bin Huang to start a dating app, called Pheramor, that factored in user DNA; raising millions for the company; hiring a team from across the country; and signing up users in all 50 states.
Though, Pheramor’s hockey stick growth came to a sudden stop this year when Apple pulled the app from its store, and there was nothing the founders or their investors could do about it. InnovationMap recently spoke with Barreto to discuss the rise and fall of Pheramor and lessons learned. Barreto mulled over the idea for the company through college and through her genetics PhD program before starting the company in I was really lucky with Pheramor to ride the wave of Houston growing its startup community.
Pheramor was the first nationwide DNA-based dating app, and for that she will always be proud, Barreto says. At our peak, we had downloads a day. In March, Barreto and Huang attended Enventure’s bioventure pitch event, where, just three years prior, the duo had pitched and won thousands of dollars. It was a real turning point, Barreto remembers.
Earlier that day, they had seen some issues with Apple’s app store and filed a service request. As she left the event, Barreto’s phone rang, and it was an Apple representative explaining that the Pheramor app had been pulled from the store.
